Pioneer Women Get Back On Track With Blowout Win Over Dakota College at Bottineau

The MCC Pioneer women snapped a 3-game conference losing streak with a resounding 89-43 win over Dakota College at Bottineau. MCC placed 5 players in double figures and outscored the winless (in MonDak Conference play) Lumberjacks 47-18 in the 2nd half to move to 2-3 in league play. 

The game was close for most of the 1st quarter but the Pioneers started pulling away late in the 1st quarter and thru the 2nd quarter building a 42-25 halftime edge. Matilda Sanz (Freshman - Madrid, Spain) led the Pioneers scoring attack with 22 points (10-16 FG, 2-4 3's), 6 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals. Laynee Elness (Freshman - Winifred, MT) popped in 20 points (7-18 FG, 2-8 3's, 4-6 FT) and Ebele Mbagwu (Freshman - Bakersfield, CA) added 18 points (9-14 FG, 0-1 FT. Mbagwu also had 10 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals. 

MCC got solid contribution off the bench from Jai Baumann (Freshman - Big Sandy, MT) with a double double that included 11 points (4-13 FG, 3-6 3's) and 10 rebounds. Kataya Kill Eagle (Sophomore - Dodson, MT) also had 11 points (3-6 FG, 1-2 3's, 4-4 FT).

  • MCC shot 36-85 (42%) from the field and 9-31 (29%) from 3-point range. MCC was only 8-15 at the free throw line. 
  • DCB shot 16-50 (32%) and failed at all 12 attempts from 3-point range. DCB was 11-15 at the free throw line. 
  • The Pioneers doubled up the Lumberjacks on the boards with a 46-23 rebounding advantage. MCC had 21 offensive boards to just 5 for DCB. 
  • The Lumberjacks committed 21 turnovers and the Pioneers had 12. 
  • MCC had a 22-3 advantage on 2nd chance points. 

The Pioneers are now10-13 overall and 2-3 in MonDak Conference play. Next up is a trip to Bismarck to play United Tribes on Thursday, January 29 at 4:30 PM MST.
