Another Last Second Loss Haunts Pioneers

The MCC Pioneers had possession of the ball with a chance to tie or win the game on Thursday night at the MCC Centra. That last possession resulted in a turnover on a drive to the hoop and Williston State got out of Miles City with a 82-20 win over the Pioneers. The last second loss was the 3rd such loss for the Pioneers in MonDak Conference play. 

Williston State led 56-48 at halftime and stretched that lead to 12 points with 12:00 remaining in the game before the Pioneers made a charge to take a 2-point lead with 4:15 seconds remaining. The teams went back and forth down the stretch with the Tetons coming out with the win to move to 5-3 in conference play. 

For the Tetons, Josiah McDonald scored 22 of his 24 points (9-21 FG, 4-9 3's, 2-2 FT) in the 1st half. Eden Hobbs ended with 16 points (8-23 FG, 0-4 3's) as 5 Tetons scored in double figures. 

MCC was led in scoring by Azenio Cossa (6'3 Sophomore - Maputo, Mozambique) with 23 points (10-18 FG, 1-4 3's, 2-4 FT) to go along with 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Uwami Chongo (6'8 Sophomore - Maputo, Mozambique) had a double double including 18 points (6-9 FG, 2-2 3's, 4-7 FT) and 12 rebounds. Shad Boyce (6'8 Freshman - Winifred, MT) contributed 14 points (4-9 FG, 2-2 3's, 4-6 FT) and 9 rebounds. Donnie Haney (6'2 Sophomore - Baton Rouge, LA) had 11 points (4-12 FG, 2-7 3's, 1-2 FT). Jace Hill (6'1 Sophomore - Columbia Falls, MT) had 9 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists. 

In the loss, Azenio Cossa notched the career 1,000 point milestone.

  • The Pioneers shot 29-66 (44%) from the field and 9-23 (39%) from 3-point range. The Pioneers struggled at the free throw line shooting 13-22 (59%).
