Hot Shooting 2nd Half Sends Dawson Past Pioneer Men

For 35 minutes on Sunday afternoon in Glendive, the MCC Pioneers and Dawson CC Bucaneers went toe to toe in what looked like another classic battle of the 2 rivals. However, the final 5 minutes went all the way of the Buccaneers as they rolled out to a 104-89 win. Dawson led the Pioneers 86-82 with 5:00 remaining when Dawson Aries Lewis hit a 3-point field goal for a 89-82 lead. MCC promptly turned the ball over and DCC capitalized with a layup and a 9-point bulge that the Pioneers would not recover from. 

Over the first 30 minutes of the game, the teams saw the score tied 9 times with 5 total lead changes. Dawson shot a blistering 22-31 (71%) in the 2nd half and 6-8 from the 3-point line. Kai Guess led Dawson with 20 points (9-11 FG, 2-3 3's) and he was followed by Matthew Kinzeler and Brandon Hymes with 14 points each. 

Azenio Cossa (6'3 Sophomore - Maputo, Mozambique) fired in 37 points (13-20 FG, 3-5 3's, 8-10 FT) to go along with 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals. Fellow Maputo native Uwami Chongo (6'8 Sophomore) notched 19 points (8-11 FG, 2-3 3's, 1-1 FT) and Donnie Haney (6'2 Sophomore - Baton Rouge, LA) followed with 15 points (5-13 FG, 4-10 3's, 1-2 FT). Jace Hill (6'1 Sophomore - Columbia Falls, MT) had a team high 6 assists and Shad Boyce (6'8 Freshman - Winifred, MT) collected 13 rebounds. Boyce currently leads the MonDak Conference in rebounding.

  • The Buccaneers shot 40-70 (57%) from the field and 9-25 (36%) from 3-point range. DCC was 15-22 from the free throw line. 
  • DCC outrebounded MCC 42-30. DCC had 14 offensive rebounds and the Pioneers had 9.
  • Each team committed 14 turnovers. 
  • Dawson had 22 assists and Miles had 17. 

Dawson moved to 18-7 overall and 6-1 in MonDak Conference play. The Pioneers fell to 11-14 overall and 4-3 in MonDak Conference play. MCC will host Williston State College on Thursday night at the MCC Centra set for a 7:30 PM MST tipoff.
