Runs Aplenty as MCC and WNCC Combine For 73 Runs in Doubleheader Split

Game 1 - Pioneers 15... Western Nebraska 18

The Miles Community College Pioneers and Western Nebraska Cougars combined for 33 runs on 28 hits and scored 18 runs in one inning of playing time as the Cougars took game 1 by the score of 18-15 on Tuesday afternoon in Scottsbluff, NE. 

MCC took a 4-0 lead after 3 innings by scoring 2 runs in the first inning and a run in the 2nd and 3rd. Western Nebraska then opened the floodgates to run scoring with a 10-run 4th inning to take a 10-4 lead. The Pioneers quickly answered that with 8 runs of their own to take the lead back at 12-10. WNCC tied the game at 12 with 2 runs in the 5th inning and then MCC followed that up with 2 more runs to go up 14-12. WNCC wasn't finished as they piled on 6 more runs in the bottom of the 6th inning for a 18-14 lead. MCC tacked on a run but was not enough to rally as the Cougars won game 1 in a slugfest. 

6 Pioneers had multiple hits in the game. Holden Christensen (C - Casper, WY) was 2-5 at the plate (2 HR, 2 R, 2 RBI) and Chance Descalchuk (3B - Regina, Saskatchewan) was 2-3 (2B, 3 R, RBI, 2 BB). Bryce Herion (1B - Kalispell, MT) was 2-4 (HR, 3B, 2 R, 2 RBI, SO) as was Brock Lopez (LF - Commerce City, CO) (2 R, BB, 2 SO). Liam Sullivan (CF - Great Falls, MT) was 3-3 at the plate (R, 2 RBI). MCC had a double, triple, and 4 home runs. 

AJ Truman (Eureka, MT) got the start on the mound and pitched 3.2 innings (3 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 5 SO). Owen Lucas (Regina, Saskatchewan) pitched 0.1 innings (4 H, 5 R, BB) before giving way to Croydon Christensen (Kaysville, UT) for 1 inning (3 H, 2 R, BB). Kellen Henry (Mohall, ND) took the loss with 1 inning pitched (3 H, 6 R, BB, 2 SO).

Game 2 - Pioneers 21... Western Nebraska 19

The MCC Pioneers rallied from a 17-7 deficit by scoring 13 runs in the 6th, 7th, and 8th innings to salvage a split in high scoring 21-19 win over Western Nebraska on Tuesday to manage a split of the 4-game series on a windy day in Scottsbluff, NE. MCC was one out from being run ruled at the end of the top of the 6th inning. 

The two teams combined for 40 runs and 45 hits on an afternoon that the teams played baseball for 7+ hours. The only inning in which the Pioneers did not score was the top of the 4th. Western Nebraska scored 17 runs in the first 4 innings but then the wind died down and they were only able to put up 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to tie the game at 19-19 and put the game in extra innings. In the top of the 8th inning, the Pioneers got a single from Raymond Shawver (RF - Miles City, MT) followed by a stolen base and then a RBI double from Chaise Tracy (SS - Billings, MT) and another RBI double from Holden Christensen (DH - Casper, WY) to take a 21-19 lead. Pierce Hollowell (Miles City, MT) was able to shut down the Cougar offense in the bottom of the 8th to pick up the win. 

MCC scored 2 runs in the top of the 1st inning and WNCC responded with 4. The Pioneers picked up 3 runs in the 2nd to take a 5-4 lead but the Cougars got 5 in the bottom of the 2nd. MCC scored 2 in the top of the 3rd but WNCC picked p 3 more for a 12-7 lead after 3 innings. After going scoreless in the 4th, the Pioneers watched the Cougars take a 17-7 lead with 5 runs in the bottom of the 4th. MCC then got a run in the 5th, 6 in the 6th, and 5 more in the 7th only to see WNCC tie it with 2 in the bottom of the 7th. 

Chase Carnahan (2B - Fallon, NV) was 4-7 (HR, 3 R, 4 RBI, 3 SO) at the plate leading 7 Pioneers with multiple hits. Chaise Tracy was 4-6 (2B, 4 R, 3 RBI) as the top and bottom of Pioneer batting order each had 4 hits. Holden Christensen was 3-6 (2B, R, 2 RBI) and Chance Descalchuk (3B - Regina, Saskatchewan) was 3-5 (HR, 2B, 3 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB, SO). Dane Gilbert (1B - Monument, CO) was 3-4 (HR, 3B, BB, 5 RBI) and Chaise Tracy was 4-6 (2B, 4 R, 3 RBI). 

Dominic Johnatakis (Syracuse, UT) got the start in game 4 for the Pioneers and pitched 3 innings (12 H, 12 R, 9 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO). Ethan Evans (Sheridan, WY) came in for 0.2 innings (4 H, 5 R, 4 BB, SO) and gave the ball to Ryan Kelly (Miles City, MT) for the next 2.2 innings (3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 SO). Pierce Hollowell (Miles City, MT) got the win and pitched 1.2 innings (H, BB, 2 SO).

  • The Pioneers had 25 hits (3 HR, 3B, 5 2B) and the Cougars had 20 hits (4 HR, 3B, 3 2B). 
  • MCC had 4 errors.

The Pioneers are now 3-5 on the season and will head to Tucson, AZ for annual spring break trip. The Pioneers open the trip agains California Miramar University on Monday, March 2 at 4:00 and 7:00 PM.
