Iowa Central Shuts Down Pioneers to Complete Another Sweep

Game 1 - Pioneers 3... Iowa Central 7

Day 2 got off to a better start for the MCC Pioneers but the end result wound up in the favor of Iowa Central again on Tuesday in Fort Dodge, Iowa. 

The Pioneers got off to a good start but were only able to come up with 4 hits at the end of the game. 2 of those 4 hits came in the 1st inning and the other 2 hits came in the 3rd inning. Triton pitchers shut down the Pioneers from the 4th inning on. 

MCC got 2 runs in the top of the 1st inning when leadoff hitter Brock Lopez (LF - Commerce City, CO) was hit by a pitch and quickly moved to 3rd base on a double off the bat of Lance Bratlien (P - Helena, MT). Lopez scored on a ground out by Coleman Parry (1B - American Fork, UT) and Bratlien moved to 3rd. Bratlien scored on a RBI single from Casey Morgan (CF - Salt Lake City, UT). 

Iowa Central quickly tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the 1st. 

The Pioneers took the lead back in the top of the 3rd inning scoring a run after Brady Bickett (RF - Rapid City, SD) walked and Bratlien hit a one out single to put runners on the corners. Parry then singled to drive in Bickett to give the Pioneers their final lead of the game. 

The Tritons struck for 2 runs in the bottom of the 3rd on the strength of back to back home runs to open the inning. Iowa Central then took command of the game by scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 4th that included another home run. 

Bratlien had 2 of the Pioneer hits while Parry and Morgan had the other 2. 

Lance Bratlien got the start on the mound for the Pioneers and pitched 3 innings (4 H, 4 R, 4 BB, 5 SO). Brady Bickett pitched the next 4 innings (5 H, 3 R, BB, 6 SO)

  • The Pioneers collected 4 hits (2B) and Iowa Central had 9 hits (3 HR, 2 2B)
  • Pioneer pitchers struck out 11 Tritons and walked 5. Triton pitchers also struck out 11 Pioneers and walked 2. They hit one Pioneer batter.

Game 2 - Pioneers 4... Iowa Central 7 (9 Innings)

The Pioneers made game 4 of the 4-game series much closer on Tuesday afternoon but just could not get enough firepower going at the plate to get a win over the #22 NJCAA team in the most recent baseball power pole. Iowa Central completed a 4-game sweep of the MCC Pioneers with a hard fought 6-3 victory in a game that was scheduled for 9 innings..

Iowa Central got a run in the bottom of the 1st and the another in the 3rd. They stretched the lead to 4-0 with 2 runs. 

The Pioneers were held scoreless until the 6th inning when they finally plated 2 runs. Lance Bratlien led the inning off with a double and Coleman Parry followed that with an RBI single to put the Pioneers on the board. Parry moved to 2nd on a groundout and then Luke Thorne (3B - Missoula, MT) walked. Max Johnson (DH - West Haven, UT) singled to load the bases. Bohden Bahnmiller (2B - Helena, MT) reached base on an error and Parry scored. With the bases loaded again, the Pioneers were unable to push in any more runs. 

In the top of the 7th inning, MCC put runners on 1st and 2nd with one out but Iowa Central pitching struck out as the Pioneers had an opportunity to tie or take the lead. Iowa Central then dropped 2 more runs in the bottom of the 7th to take a 6-2 lead. 

Thorne led off the top of the 8th with a solo home run to rightfield. Bahnmiller singled on a bunt and Ostyn Brennan (SS - Kalispell, MT) walked. Bahnmiller then stole 3rd and scored on a throwing error by the Iowa Central catcher to cut the lead to 6-4.

Iowa Central kept the pressure on with another run in the bottom of the 8th inning to go ahead 7-4. 

Davis Mosier (Billings, MT) got the start for MCC and pitched 4 innings (3 H, 4 R, 5 BB, 7 SO) but Mosier also hit 3 Triton batters. Max Holden (Kalispell, MT) pitched the next 3.2 innings (3 H, 3 R, 6 BB, 6 SO). Brandon Hegedus finished the game for the Pioneers and struck out the only batter he faced.

MCC will leave Iowa with a 17-9 record. MCC games against Lake Region State College on the weekend of March 22-23 have been moved to Miles City instead of Devils Lake, ND due to snow. Saturday games will begin at 1:00 PM MDT. This is the start of the MonDak Conference season.
