Baseball Gets 1st Sweep of Spring Break Trip

Game 1 - Pioneers 21... Cal Miramar 5 (5 Innings)

The MCC Pioneer baseball team jumped all over Cal Miramar and didn't step off of the gas pedal as the Pioneers dominated play on Wednesday morning in Tucson, Arizona.

MCC plated 9 runs in the 1st inning and 5 more in the 2nd to build a 14-1 lead and didn't look back. 

Coleman Parry (DH - American Fork, UT) started the scoring with a RBI double after Bohden Bahnmiller (SS - Helena, MT) led the game off with a walk. The final 8 runs in the inning came with 2 outs. Davis Mosier (1B - Billings, MT) had a RBI double and Luke Thorne (2B - Missoula, MT) cracked a 2-run homer. Ostyn Brennen (3B - Kalispell, MT) and Casey Morgan (CF - Salt Lake City, UT) hit back to back doubles and the Pioneers led 5-1. Morgan stole home on a double steal and Tanner Goertz (LF - Highlands Ranch, CO) had a RBI double. Parry finished the inning with his 2nd double in as many at bats and drove in 2 more. 

MCC scored 5 in the 2nd inning with the big shot coming on another Parry double that drove in 2 more runs. Just to keep things going, MCC posted 4 runs in the 3rd inning to go up 18-2. The Pioneers walked the bases loaded and Brock Lopez (RF - Commerce City, CO) cleared the bases with a 3-RBI triple and scored on an infield single from Bahnmiller. 

Miramar got 3 runs in the top of the 4th and the Pioneers matched that with 3 of their own in the bottom of the inning. Brandon Hegadus (C - Littleton, CO) led the inning off with a solo home run. Walker Bennett (1B-Helena, MT) was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a RBI single from Hunter Hauck (2B - Riverton, WY). Bahnmiller finished the Pioneer scoring with a RBI double to right field. 

Parry led MCC with 3 hits and the Pioneers got 2 hits from Bahnmiller, Mosier, Brennen, and Lopez. Parry had 5 RBI and Lopez added 3 RBI. Bahnmiller, Thorne, and Morgan had 2 RBI. 

Eli Kelley (Rapid City, SD) pitched all 5 innings for the Pioneers and gave up 5 hits, 5 runs (3 ER), BB, and 4 strikeouts. 

Inside the Box Score

  • The Pioneers had 16 hits (7 2B, 3B, 2 HR) and Miramar had 5 hits (2B, HR). 
  • Miramar had 2 errors and the Pioneers had one. 
  • Pioneer batters struck out 3 times and walked 6 times. Miramar batters struck out 4 times and walked once. 
  • The Pioneers had 5 stolen bases and Miramar had 3. 

 

Game 2 - Pioneers 9 ... Gustavus Adolphus 7

Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader turned out to be much more dramatic than game 1. Gustavus got on the board 1st with a run in the bottom of the 1st inning. MCC quickly answered with 2 run in the top of the 2nd after Davis Mosier singled with one out and then with 2 out Ostyn Brennan was hit by a pitch putting runners on 1st and 2nd. Casey Morgan registered a RBI single to rightfield and Brock Lopez reached on an error that drove in Brennan. 

Gustavus answered with 2 of their own in the bottom of the 2nd to take a 3-2 lead but just like that MCC answered again in the top of the 3rd scoring twice on bases loaded walks by Mosier and Thorne. The 3rd inning onslaught continued with a 2 RBI single from Brennan and a RBI single from Morgan for a 7-3 lead. Tanner Goertz then reached base on a Gustavus error and Brennan scored taking the Pioneers to the bottom of the 3rd with a healthy 8-3 lead. 

The Pioneers picked up another run in the 4th inning after a Thorne triple and RBI single from Brennan. 

Gustavus scored a run in the bottom of the 5th to cut the lead to 9-4. Gustavus made things very interesting in the bottom of the 7th inning by scoring 3 runs and putting runners on the corners but Brennan got the Pioneers out of the jam. 

Morgan and Brennan each had 2 hits for the Pioneers. Brennan had 3 RBI and Morgan had 2. 

Keenan Kraft (Belgrade, MT) got the start for MCC and pitched 5 innings (5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO). Sam Hall (Eureka, MT) pitched the 6th inning (R) and Brennan pitched the 7th inning (H, 2 R, 2 BB, SO).

Inside the Box Score

  • The Pioneers had 8 hits (3B) and Gustavus had 6 hits (3 2B).
  • Each team had 4 errors in the game. 
  • Pioneer batters struck out 4 times and walked 4 times. Gustavus batters replicated that.
  • There were no stolen bases. 

The Pioneers are now 9-5 on the season and will take Thursday off. They will resume play Friday with 2 games against Riverland CC at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
