Pioneers Split Opening Day in Tucson

Game 1 - Pioneers 1... Mount Marty JV 3

The MCC Pioneer bats cooled after after a trip to the Arizona sun. Less than a week after knocking 17 home runs in a 4-game series at Western Nebraska, The Pioneers had a tough time coming up with the big hits in game 1 of their first day in Tucson, Arizona. Mount Marty University JV cooled the Pioneer bats and defeated MCC 3-1 on Monday morning. 

Mount Marty could only muster up 2 hits against the Pioneers but scored 2 runs in bottom of the 1st inning on a 2-run home run. The Pioneers cut that lead to 2-1 in the 6th inning, Mount Marty put one more run on the board in the bottom of the 6th to hold of the Pioneers. 

Miles did not pick up an extra base hit in the game and was led by 2 hits from Lance Bratlien (RF - Helena, MT) and Luke Wilson (DH - Calgary, Alberta).  Bohden Bahnmiller (SS - Helena, MT) had the only RBI of the game for MCC. 

Lee Neugebauer (Rapid City, SD) got the start for the Pioneers and pitched 2 innings (H, 2 R, BB) and gave way to Max Holden (Kalispell, MT) for the final 4 innings (H, R, 4 BB, 6 SO).

Game 2 - Pioneers 12... Gustavus Adolphus JV 4

It took until after 12:00 for the Pioneer bats to wake up in the Arizona sun as the Pioneers fueled the power outage in a 12-4 win over the Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) JV on Monday in Tucson. The Pioneers split their doubleheader on opening day of Tucson spring break trip. 

The Pioneers scored more runs in the 1st inning than they did all of game 1 by plating 3 runs on RBI from Coleman Parry (1B - American Fork, UT), Luke Wilson, and Tanner Goertz (LF - Highlands Ranch, CO). MCC added a run in the 2nd inning on a RBI single off of the bat of Evan Smith (DH - Wenatchee, WA). Adolphus picked up a run in the top of the 3rd and the Pioneers countered with another in the bottom of the 3rd on a solo home run from Wilson. 

Gustavus cut the lead to 5-4 in the top of the 5th but the Pioneers quickly answered with 5 runs in the bottom of the inning for a commanding 10-5 lead. Goertz blasted a 2-run homer in the 5th inning and then Casey Morgan (CF - Salt Lake City, UT) singled and was driven in on a triple from Luke Thorne (2B - Missoula, MT). Thorne scored on a groundout and then Smith hit his 2nd double of the game adding a RBI. 

MCC added 2 runs in the 6th inning on a Gustavus error for the final count of 12-4. 

Chase Goode (Castle Rock, CO) took the mound for the 1st time as a Pioneer after sitting out last season with rehab from arm surgery and pitched one inning (BB, 2 SO). Mayson Shively (Three Forks, MT) pitched the next 5 innings (7 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 4 SO) and Colin Fortier (American Fork, UT) pitched the final inning and struck out 2.

  • The Pioneers had 11 hits (4 2B, 3B, 2 HR) and Gustavus had 7 hits (HR).
  • Pioneer batters struck out 11 times and walked 7 times. Gustavus batters struck out 8 times and walked 3 times.

MCC is now 6-4 on the season and will play Mount Marty JV Tuesday at 12:00 PM and Cal Miramar U. at 3:00 PM MST.
