Pioneers Split Games With Williston State Saturday

The MCC Pioneers could only muster up 4 hits as the Williston State pitching duo of Forno and Penner shut down the Pioneer bats to win game 1 of Saturday doubleheader 8-2 in Miles City. 

The Pioneer scored a run in the bottom of the 1st inning after LF Grant Gabbert (Thorton, CO) singled with one out. RF Wyatt Searcey (Denver, CO) drove Gabbert in with a double to right field. Williston State answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning for a 3-1 lead. 

MCC then scored in the top of the 2nd as 1B Spencer Searcey (Denver, CO) was hit by a pitch and 2B Dalton Martin (Gillette, WY) reached on a passed ball 3rd strike. SS Jaeden Jordahl (Billings, MT) then drove in the final run of the game for the Pioneers with a single to right field. 

Bo Hays (Bozeman, MT) pitched 3.1 innings (7 H, 5 R, BB, 3 SO) for the Pioneers before giving way to Michael Ohlin (Billings, MT). Ohlin pitched 2.2 innings (2 H, 3 R, 5 BB, 5 SO).

The Pioneers reversed forturnes in game 2 on Saturday by taking advantage of 8 walks and riding the strong right arm of Patrick Dietz (Manhattan, MT). Dietz pitched 4 scoreless innings and finished with 5 innings pitched (6 H, 2 R, BB, 3 SO) before giving way to Cameron Murphy (Torrington, WY) for the final 2 innings (2 H, R, BB, 3 SO).

The Pioneers broke up a scoreless game with 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd. All of the Pioneer action in the 3rd inning came with 2 outs. Grant Gabbert led off the inning with a walk and with one out Wyatt Searcey was hit by a pitch. With 2 outs, Lane Neill (Belgrade, MT) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. 1B Kam Kostial (Rexburg, ID) was then hit by a pitch to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. C Michael Ohlin (Billings, MT) cracked a 2 RBI single followed by a 2B Jessen West (Billings, MT) RBI single and a 4-0 Pioneer lead. 

MCC tacked on another run in the 4th inning after back to back walks from Gabbert and CF Kruz Slevira (Billings, MT). With one out, Tommy O'Connell (Kalispell, MT) singled to drive in Gabbert. 

Williston State score 2 runs in the 5th to cut the lead to 5-2 but the Pioneers answered back with 3 more in the 5th. Ohlin walked and was replaced on the base paths by Matt Burton (Helena, MT) who quickly advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch. West hit a sacrifice bunt and moved Burton to 3rd. Jordahl then singled to drive in Burton. Gabbert followed with a single to put runners on 1st and 2nd and the Slevera singled to load the bases. O'Connell hit another single for 2 RBI and a 8-2 Pioneer lead. 

The last Pioneer run came on a Burton single with 2 outs, a Jordahl walk, and a Gabbert single that scored Burton. Williston State hit an insignificant HR in the 6th inning before the Pioneers closed things out. 

Cam Murphy (Torrington, WY) finished off what Patrick Dietz started with 2 innings (2 H, R, BB, 3 SO).

  • The Pioneers committed 3 errors to only one for WSC. 
  • Tommy O'Connell was 2-4 ( 3 RBI) and Grant Gabbert was 2-3 (RBI, 3 R).
