Pioneers Beat Pima on Final Day in Tucson

The MCC Pioneer baseball team ended it's spring break trip to Tucson in grand fashion on Monday night by defeating Pima CC 6-2. The Pioneers scattered 8 hits and the pitching combination of Jeremy Gee (Brigham City, UT) and Cameron Murphy (Torrington, WY) combined on a 3-hitter and struck out 9 in the victory. Gee pitched 5 innings (3 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 6 SO) before giving the final 2 innings to Murphy (BB, 3 SO). 

Pima got on the board first with a run in the top of the first. MCC countered that with 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. 2B Jaeden Jordahl (Billings, MT) singled and DH Takumi Kimoto (Brisbane, Australia) doubled to drive Jordahl home. CF Grant Gabbert (Thorton, CO) walked putting runners on 1st and 2nd. After the Pioneers hit in to a double play, C Michael Ohlin (Billings, MT) singled and Gabbert scored. SS Lane Neill (Belgrade, MT) was hit by a pitch and RF Wyatt Searcey hit an RBI single to put the Pioneers up 3-1. 

Pima scored a run in the 3rd inning and the score stayed 3-2 until the bottom of the 6th when MCC plated 3 insurance runs. Ohlin led the inning off with a single and was replaced by courtesy runner Dalton Martin (Gillette, WY). Neill singled and Wyatt Searcey smacked a triple to right field bringing in 2 runs. 1B Spencer Searcey (Denver, CO) was hit by a pitch and LF Matt Burton drove home Wyatt Searcey with an infield single. 

Cameron Murphy came in and closed the door on the Aztecs.

Wyatt Searcey had 3 RBI in the game to go with his 2 hits and Ohlin also had 2 hits.

  • MCC committed 3 errors and Pima had none.
  • Pioneer pitchers struck out 9 batters. The Pioneers struck out only 4 times. 
  • MCC walked 5 times. 

The Pioneers are now 13-7 on the season and start MonDak Conference play (weather pending) on March 25 when they host Bismarck State College at 1:00 and 4:00 at Connors Stadium.
