Pioneers Need Only 10 Innings to Sweep Rainy River on Sunday

Pioneers 14... Rainy River 4 (5 Innings)

Powerful Pioneer bats were out in full force on Sunday in Tucson as MCC used 6 extra base hits enroute to a 14-4 win in Game 1 over Rainy River. The Pioneers took advantage of 9 walks and 14 hits and used a big 2nd and 4th inning. 

The Pioneers scored a run in the bottom of the 1st when DH Takumi Kimoto (Brisbane, Australia) doubled and C Michael Ohlin (Billings, MT) walked. Kimoto advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch and then scored on a balk by the Rainy River pitcher. Rainy River tied the game in the top of the 2nd on a home run. 

MCC then took control in the bottom of the 2nd inning when 3B Kam Kostial (Rexburg, ID) walked and 1B Spencer Searcey (Denver, CO) singled. Kostial and Searcey each moved a base on a wild pitch, and 2B Dalton Martin (Gillette, WY) singled to score Kostial. Searcey then scored on a wild pitch and Martin moved to 2nd. Kimoto hit his 2nd double of the game and Martin scored to make it 4-1. Ohlin connected for a triple to drive in Kimoto and with RF Wyatt Searcey (Denver, CO) at the plate courtesy runner Dyson Kinnaman (Belgrade, MT) scored on a wild pitch to make the score 6-1. Searcey walked and CF Kruz Slevira reached 1st on an error. SS Lane Neill (Belgrade, MT) walked to load the bases and Spencer Searcey singled to drive in his brother Wyatt for a 7-1 lead. 

Rainy River scored 2 in the top of the 3rd and another in the 4th to cut the lead to 7-4. MCC then came up with a 5-spot in the bottom of the 4th after one out when Neill singled and Kam Kostial went deep to right field for a 2-run home run to make the lead 9-4. Spencer Searcey walked and Grant Gabbert (Thorton, CO) hit the 2nd home run of the inning for an 11-4 lead. Kimoto then reached 1st on an error and Ohlin singled before Wyatt Searcey singled to make the lead 12-4. 

MCC then scored 2 more in the bottom of the 5th inning to end the game early. Tyler Tenney (Helena, MT) walked and Dyson Kinnaman singled. Spencer Searcey walked to load the bases and Jaeden Jordahl doubled driving in the final 2 runs. 

Bo Hays (Bozeman, MT) pitched a complete game 5 innings (4 H, 4 R, 2 BB 3 SO).

Inside the Box Score

  • Kimoto had 3 hits and scored twice. Ohlin and Searcey each had 2 hits. 
  • Each team had 2 errors. 

 

Game 2 - Pioneers 18... Rainy River 1 (5 Innings)

MCC Pioneer batters walked 12 times in game 2 on Sunday. MCC batters reached base 8 times after getting hit by a pitch. MCC batters got 5 hits, but at the end of 5 innings the Pioneers had plated 18 runs. Starting pitcher Jack Corriveau tossed a one-hitter and struck out 8 as the Pioneers easiley handled Minnesota North - Rainy River.

Wyatt Searcey had 2 hits and MCC got a hit from Jaeden Jordahl, Spencer Searcey, and Brady Jones

Rainy River had 2 errors and the Pioneers had one. 

MCC will face Pima Community College on Monday at 5:00 PM in it's last game of the 2023 spring break trip.
