NJC Hands Pioneer Baseball 2 Losses on Opening Day

Game 1 - Pioneers 12... Northeastern JC 22 (6 innings)

The NJC Plainsmen scored at least 2 runs in every inning and piled up 22 total runs to defeat the MCC Pioneers 22-12 (6 innings) to kick off the 2023 MCC Pioneer baseball season on Sunday in Parker, Colorado. NJC scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 1st and then 5 more in the bottom of the 6th to end game one. 

Sophomore Catcher Takumi Kimoto (Brisbane, Australia) had a hot bat to start the season going 3-4 on the day with 2 home runs and 3 RBI. 1B Kam Kostial (Rexburg, ID) was the only other Pioneer with multiple hits going 2-4 (2B, 1B) and an RBI. RF Wyatt Searcy (Littleton, CO) also went deep for the Pioneers and had 2 RBI. DH Tommy O'Connell had an RBI double and scored 2 runs. Jaeden Jordahl (Billings, MT) and Matt Burton (Helena, MT) had the other RBI's for the Pioneers. 

The Pioneer pitching staff had a rough day allowing 22 runs on 18 hits. Starter Jeremy Gee (Brigham City, UT) pitched 3 innings (12 R, 11 R, BB, 2 SO) before giving way to Jacob Walker (Brisbane, Australia). Walker pitched 2 innings (5 R, 4 H, 3 BB, 3 SO) and Hayden Meehan (Columbia Falls, MT) pitched the 6th inning (5 R, 3 H, BB) before the Plainsmen ended the game due to the 10 run rule. 

The Pioneers and the Plainsmen each committed 2 errors. 

 

Game 2 - Pioneers 5... Northeastern JC 11

NJC scored 6 runs in the 2nd inning and then followed that up with 5 runs in the 5th as the Plainsmen pulled away from the Pioneers after MCC had cut the 6-0 NJC lead to 6-3 with 2 runs in the 4th and another in the 5th. MCC had 7 hits on the afternoon with Kam Kostial and Wyatt Searcy the only Pioneers with multiple hits. Kostial was 2-4 (2B, 2 RBI) and Searcy was also 2-4 (HR, 2 RBI). Grant Gabbert (Thorton, CO) had the other RBI for MCC. 

Bo Hays (Bozeman, MT) got the start and pitched 4 innings (6 R, 5 H, BB, 3 SO) before giving way to Spencer Searcy (Littleton, CO) who pitched the final 2 innings (5 R, 5 H, 2 BB, SO). 

MCC committed 4 errors in the game and NJC had 1.

The teams will meet again today at 11:00 AM and 2:30 PM.
