Western Nebraska Turns Tables on Pioneers

Game 1... Western Nebraska 13... MCC Pioneers 6

The Western Nebraska Cougars got their bats going early on Tuesday in the 2nd day of a 4-game series in Scottsbluff. The Cougars struck for 9 runs in the first 2 innings and that was enough as WNCC held on for a 13-6 win in game 1 of the doubleheader. The Pioneer defense had 5 errors on the afternoon and the pitching staff could not hold down the Cougars. 

Cy Miller (Helena, MT) got the start for the Pioneers and gave up 6 runs on 3 hits in 1.1 innings of work. He walked 2 Cougars and struck out 2. Miller was relieved by Chase Linn (Great Falls, MT) who gave up 3 runs on 5 hits while walking 3 batters and striking out 2. Jaxon Grogan (Parker, CO) finished off the game going 2 innings and giving up 4 runs on 2 hits with 2 walks and 1 strikeout. 

Offensively, Dawson Parry, Stockton Brems (American Fork, UT), and Ian Krump (Rapid City, SD) all went deep for the 2nd consecutive day. Parry had 3 RBI and Krump was the only Pioneer with 2 hits. 

 

Game 2... Western Nebraska 12... MCC Pioneers 4

The Cougars evened up the 4 game set with a Tuesday sweep of the Pioneers. WNCC scored in each of the first 5 innings and benefitted from 8 free passes to first base by Pioneer pitchers. Grayson Skinner (Rapid City, SD) started on the mound and gave up 5 hits and 5 runs with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts over 3 innings. Stockton Brems came in and gave up 7 runs on 1 hit with 5 walks in 1.2 innings. 

Ian Krump continued his hot hitting as he went 3-4 with 2 doubles and a home run. He had 3 RBI and accounted for 8 total bases. Jake Lacey (Gillette, WY) was the only other Pioneer with more than one hit as he was 2-4 with one run scored. 

The Pioneers fell to 7-6 on the season and will play their first home games of the season this weekend as they host Dakota College-Bottineau on Saturday and Sunday at Denton Field.
