Softball Ends Regular Season With Sweep of Bismarck State

Game 1 - Pioneers 8... Bismarck State 6

The Pioneers rallied from a 4-0 deficit tying the game at 4-4 in the 6th inning and then scoring 4 runs in the 7th inning before holding on to a 8-6 victory in game 1 on Sunday in Bismarck, ND. 

The Bismarck State Mystics erupted for 4 runs in the 1st inning after being shut out in game 2 on Saturday. The Pioneers chipped away at the lead getting one run in the 4th inning on a Brooke Richardson (1B - Helena, MT) 2-out RBI double after Arin Eaton (CF - Belgrade, MT) had singled with one out. 

MCC got another run in the 5th inning when Dalilah Hernandez (2B - Laurel, MT) led the inning off with a double and was driven in on a single off the bat of Khloey Robinson (LF - Belgrade, MT). In the 6th innings, Eaton led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly RBI from Rylynn Krein (DP - Fergus Falls, MN). Richardson then singled, moved to 2nd on a sacrifice and scored on a Hernandez single. 

In the deciding 7th inning, Adrie Mortensen (C - Rexburg, ID) doubled to lead off the inning. Brylee Lowell (RF - Columbus, MT) singled to put runners on the corners. Malory Webb (SS - Idaho Falls, ID) had a bunt single to load the bases. Eaton flied out to centerfield but Mortensen scored after tagging up. Then, with 2 outs, Richardson connected for a 3-run home run and the Pioneers led 8-4. 

The Mystics scored 2 in the 7th and had the tying run on 1st base but the Pioneers got out of the jam to secure victory. 

Rylie Schlepp (Helena, MT) got the start and pitched 3.1 innings (4 R, 10 H, 2 BB, 2 SO). Krein finished the final 3.2 innings (2 R, 5 H, 2 SO).

  • MCC had the only error of the game.

Game 2 - Pioneers 4... Bismarck State 1

MCC finished the regular season on a high note by finishing off a 4-game sweep of the Mystics with a 4-1 win. 

The Pioneers scored 3 runs in the 3rd inning. Brylee Lowell was hit by a pitch, stole 2nd, and moved to 3rd on a groundout. Arin Eaton continued her hot hitting with a RBI single. Eaton scored after Dalilah Hernandez reached base on a Mystic error. Lily Bolin (1B - Belgrade, MT) hit a single to drive in Hernandez. 

Bismarck State cut the lead to 3-1 by scoring in the 5th inning but MCC got that run back in the top of the 6th. Megan Brownson (C - Billings, MT) singled to lead off the inning. Adrie Mortensen reached base on an error. Lowell had a bunt single to load the bases and the Brownson scored on a fielder's choice RBI from Malory Webb. Eaton, Bolin, and Lowell each had 3 hits for the Pioneers. 

Rylynn Krein stayed in the circle for the entirety of the afternoon and gave up 1 run on 6 hits. She struck out 5 and didn't walk anyone.

MCC finishes the regular season 18-6 in MonDak Conference play and 30-14 overall. The Region XIII Playoffs are set for Thursday - Saturday in Glendive, MT. The Pioneers are the #2 seed in the 6-team playoff. They will play the winner of #3 Dakota County Tech/#6 Lake Region State on Thursday at 4:00 PM MST. The winner of the Region XIII will face the winner of Region XI for a trip to the national tournament.
