Krein's Walkoff Home Run Gives Pioneers a Sunday Split With Williston State

Game 1 - Pioneers 2... Williston State 3

Williston State took advantage of a MCC Pioneer error in the top of the 7th inning to plate 2 runs and earn a hard fought 3-2 win on Saturday afternoon in Miles City, MT.

The Pioneers traveled to Williston on Friday and won 2 close games but the Tetons returned the favor in game 1 on Saturday. The Tetons scored first with a run in the top of the 1st inning but were shut down until the 2 runs in the top of the 7th. 

MCC tied the game with their 1st run of the game in the bottom of the 4th inning when Sierra Tuss (2B - Belgrade, MT) walked and Khoey Robinson (LF - Belgrade, MT) drove her in with a triple to rightfield. The Pioneers then took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the 5th inning after a leadoff single from Malory Webb (SS - Idaho Falls, ID), another single on a bunt from Arin Eaton (CF - Belgrade, MT), and then a RBI single from Rylnn Krein (DP - Fergus Falls, MN).

That 2-1 lead by the Pioneers held until the 7th inning when the Tetons plated 2 runs to pick up the win. 

Webb was 3-3 (BB, R) at the plate and was the only Pioneer with multiple hits. 

Rylie Schepp (Helena, MT) got the start in the circle for MCC and pitched 6.1 innings (3 R, 2 ER, 6 H, 4 BB, 4 SO) and gave to the ball to Rian Ferriter (Butte, MT) for the last 2 outs of the game (H, SO).

  • The Pioneers collected 7 hits (3B, 2B) and the Tetons also had 7 hits.
  • MCC had the only 2 errors in the game. 
  • Pioneer batters struck out 8 times and walked 6 times.

Game 2 - Pioneers 4... Williston State 3

A Williston State Saturday sweep seemed imminent in game 2 as the Williston State Tetons took a 3-1 lead to the bottom of the 7th inning and were 2 outs from victory. That is when Malory Webb and Arin Eaton set the stage for a Pioneer rally with back to back singles. Rylynn Krein then stepped to the plate and took a 0-1 pitch over the centerfield fence to give the Pioneers a thrilling 4-3 walkoff win to salvage a split of the day.

Williston scored 2 runs in the 1st inning and another in the 2nd to build a 3-0 lead. Teton pitching shut down the Pioneer bats until the 6th inning when the Pioneers were able to scrape in a run after Addison Sanders (3B - Idaho Falls, ID) led of the inning with a single. Sanders moved to 3rd on 2 Pioneer groundouts before being driven in by Adrie Mortensen (C - Rexburg, ID).

Rian Ferriter got the start for MCC and pitched 6 innings (3 R, 2 ER, 4 H, 5 BB, SO) and Krein pitched the last inning (SO).

  • Williston committed the games only error.

The Pioneers are now 13-5 in MonDak Conference play and 25-13 overall. Williston is 9-7 in conference play and 18-18 overall. MCC will host Dawson on Wednesday afternoon with 1st pitch of doubleheader coming at 1:00 PM MDT.
