Heartbreaking Loss to Dawson Drops Pioneers to Loser Out Situation

The MCC Pioneers put on 7th inning rally to tie the game with Dawson and then saw the Bucs score the game winning run with 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th inning to drop the Pioneers in to loser out play Saturday morning at 10:00 AM. The Pioneers will face Dakota County Tech again with the opportunity to face Dawson again in the Region XIII championship. The Pioneers would have to beat the Blue Knights and then defeat Dawson twice to move on to the North Plains District Championship. 

The Pioneers got the scoring started in the top of the 1st when leadoff hitter Sierra John tripled and scored on a ground out by LF Liz Ybarra. Dawson rallied with 3 runs in the bottom of the first that included two home runs and then added another run in the 3rd inning. The Pioneers cut the lead to 4-2 in the 4th when 3B Taylor Feller homered to centerfield. 

Dawson put 3 more runs on the board in the bottom of the 4th and added another in the 5th for an 8-2 lead. The top of the 7th inning got exciting when C HaiLeigh Davis doubled with one out. Sierra John walked and RF Cassidy Bagnell hit in to a fielders choice leaving runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs. Ybarra quickly doubled to the opposite field scoring John and moving Bagnell to 3rd. CF Skylar Higgs then hit a hard grounder that was misplayed at 3rd base and Bagnell scored. Ybarra moved to 3rd and Higgs moved to 2nd. 1B Morgan Lampshire hit another hard grounder that was misplayed by the Dawson shortstop and the lead was cut to 8-6. With a full count and 2 outs, Taylor Feller tied the game with a home run to centerfield. 

Dawson walked the game off with a 2-out RBI single in the bottom of the 7th. 

Peyton Whitehead started the game for MCC and pitched 5 innings (8 R, 10 H, 2 BB, 2 SO). Madi Henry pitched the final 1.2 innings (R, 3 H, SO).

  • Dawson outhit Miles 13-8. Feller had 3 hits and 3 RBI for the Pioneers. Davis had 2 hits and Ybarra had 2 RBI.

  • DCC had the only stolen base of the game.
