Pioneers Get Two Wins on Sophomore Day

Game 1 - Pioneers 13... Lake Region State 2 (5 Innings)

A trio of Pioneers drove in 3 runs and P Madi Henry settled down after a bit of a slow start as the Pioneers smacked Lake Region 13-2 in five innings of game 1 on Saturday afternoon. 1B Hazel Eaton (Belgrade, MT) supplied a 2-3 effort (HR, 3 RBI, 3 R), LF Liz Ybarra (Belgrade, MT) was 1-3 (3 RBI, 2 R), and RF Reed Johnson (Columbus, MT) smacked a 3-run homer in a 1-3 effort (3 RBI, R) as the Pioneers used productive 3rd and 4th innings in the win. 

3B Morgan Lampshire (Murray, UT) contributed a 2 RBI double to help as those four players accounted for all of the Pioneer RBI's in game 1. 2B Mars Weaver (Rexburg, ID) walked 3 times and scored twice as well. 

Henry pitched a complete game 5 innings ( 5 H, 2 R, 3 SO) and shut the Royals down after the 1st 2 innings. 

Inside the Box Score

  • The Pioneers drew 8 walks in the game and Henry did not walk any Royals. 
  • The Pioneers had 2 errors and the Royals only 1. 
  • The teams combined for only 11 hits (Pioneers 6, Royals 5)
  • The Pioneers had 4 stolen bases and the Royals did not steal a bag. 
  • Brynn Cullen homered for the Royals; Hazel Eaton and Reed Johnson hit homers for the Pioneers.

Game 2 - Pioneers 15... Lake Region State 11

Game 2 was a wild and crazy affair that saw multiple lead changes and a plethora of offense over the final 3 innings. The two teams combined for 19 runs over the final 3 innings with 5 home runs in a game that saw the Pioneers lead 4-3 going to the 5th inning. 

3B Megan Johnson (Preston, ID) had a big game for the Pioneers with a 3-5 effort that resulted in 2 doubles, a home run, and 6 RBI. Hazel Eaton had 2 hits and 3 runs scored while Sierra John (Idaho Falls, ID) and Liz Ybarra (Belgrade, MT) each had 2 hits in the game. John scored twice and Ybarra scored 3 times. 

After a 1-1 tie going to the 3rd inning, the Pioneers picked up 3 runs in the 3rd, 2 in the 5th, 6 in the 6th, and 3 more in the 7th. Lake Region scored 2 in the 3rd, 4 in the 5th, 3 in the 6th and one more the 7th. 

Lake Region batters smacked 4 home runs off of Pioneer pitching. 

Alex Carr (Idaho Falls, ID) got the start for MCC and pitched 4 innings (4 H, 3 R, SO). Hazel Eaton pitched the 5th inning (4 H, 4 R) and Peyton Whitehead (Joliet, MT) finished the final 2 innings (5 H, 4 R, BB, 2 SO).

Inside the Box Score

  • Royal pitching walked 8 batters and hit 3 others for 11 free bases. Pioneer pitching walked only one and hit only one batter. That was the difference in the game. 
  • Each team had 2 stolen bases. 
  • The Pioneers struck out 6 times compared to only 3 for the Royals. 
  • Lake Region committed 2 errors and Miles had 1.

The Pioneers are now 12-2 in MonDak Conference play and 25-4 overall. They will host NDSCS on Monday at 9:00 AM in a doubleheader.
