Pioneer Softball Wins Twice on Friday in Tucson

Game 1 - Pioneers 19... Minnesota North - Vermillion 2 (3 Innings)

For the 3rd time this week in Tucson, the MCC Pioneers dominated MN-Vermillion by pounding the Ironhawks ....... on Friday. MCC saw MN-North get off to a quick start with one run on 3 hits in the top of the 1st. The Pioneers countered that with 5 runs of their own in the bottom half of the 1st. The Pioneers also had 3 hits in the inning and took advantage of 3 Ironhawk errors to put up 5 runs. 

SS Sierra John (Idaho Falls, ID) singled to start the inning and scored on an error by the rightfielder. With one out, CF Reed Johnson (Columbus, MT) doubled to left field. She advanced to 3rd on a passed ball before 2B Arin Eaton (Belgrade, MT) and DP Peyton Whitehead (Joliet, MT) both walked to load the bases. Johnson scored on a passed ball and then 1B Abi Maddock came up with a 2 RBI single to center field. Maddock advanced to 3rd on an error and then scored the 5th run of the inning on another passed ball. 

The top of the order kicked off the 2nd inning and the Pioneers stayed at the plate for days scoring 11 runs. John and LF Alexa Lewis (Bozeman, MT) each singled and Reed Johnson walked to load the bases. That set up C Taylor Feller (Laurel, MT) to hit a grand slam home run to make score 9-1. Arin Eaton followed that up with a double and Whitehead walked. Maddock added to her RBI total with a single scoring Eaton. RF Sidney Rusdal (Libby, MT) then singled to load the bases again. 3B Morgan Lampshire (Murray, UT) had a 2 RBI single and the score quickly bolted to 12-1. Lewis walked with one out to load the bases. Rusdal scored on a wild pitch and Lampshire scored when Reed Johnson reached base on an error. Feller walked and Whitehead singled in Reed Johnson to make the score 16-1. 

Vermillion scored a run in the top of the 3rd and the Pioneers finished the game off in the bottom of the 3rd with 3 more runs. Lampshire singled and Shannon Nelson (Livingston, MT) walked. Lewis then had an RBI single scoring Lampshire. Reed Johnson then singled to load up the bases before Isabelle Adams (Park City, MT) walked for an 18-2 lead. Lewis then scored on an Eaton single to end the game. 

Hazel Eaton (Belgrade, MT) pitched 3 innings and gave up 5 hits, 2 runs, while striking out 4. 

Inside the Box Score

  • MCC cracked 15 hits in 3 innings. John, Lewis, R. Johnson, A. Eaton, Lampshire, and Maddock all had 2 hits. 
  • MCC drew 9 walks in the game and only struck out once. 
  • MCC did not have an error and the Ironhawks had 5.

Game 2 - Pioneers ... Williston State

The Pioneers struck 1st after neither team scored in the first 2 innings. With one out in the top of the 3rd, Shannon Nelson was hit by a pitch and Sierra John walked. LF Liz Ybarra (Belgrade, MT) then doubled to left field and drove in 2 runs for a 2-0 Pioneer lead. 

Williston State quickly answered in the bottom of the 3rd evening things up at 2-2. The Pioneers quickly took the lead back in the top of the 4th inning after DP Megan Johnson (Preston, ID) walked and stole 2nd base. 1B Hazel Eaton drove Johnson in with a double to left field. 

Miles picked up 4 runs in the 5th inning after back to back walks by Hazel Eaton and Feller led to a C HaiLeigh Davis (Shepherd, MT) single to load the bases. Shannon Nelson walked to bring in a run and then John singled to bring in Feller. Cassidy Bagnell (Frenchtown, MT) grounded in to a fielder's choice scoring Davis. Ybarra singled to bring in John and the Pioneers led 7-2. 

Williston State hit a home run in the bottom of the 6th to cut the lead to 7-3. They scored one more in the bottom of the 7th but the Pioneers emerged victorious with a 7-4 win to move their season record to 11-2. 

Madi Henry (Spanish Fork, UT) pitched a complete game 7 innings. She allowed 4 runs on 8 hits, while walking one, and striking out 2. 

Inside the Box Score

  • The Pioneers had only 6 hits compared to 8 for the Tetons. 
  • MCC committed 3 errors and Williston didn't have any.
  • Liz Ybarra was the only Pioneer with 2 hits. She also had 3 RBI's. John, Bagnell, H. Eaton, and Nelson had the other RBI's. 

MCC will finish it's spring break trip in Tucson with 2 more games on Saturday. They will play Rochester Community and Technical College at 3:30 PM followed by a game with California Miramar at 6:00 PM.
